Nordic Skiing

Resurrecting the Nordic Ski program here at Middlesex School could not have come at a better time.  Offering another outdoor athletic option during the Covid era is a welcome addition from the safety perspective but more importantly allows us to develop confidence and skill in our athletes in a more relaxed format without ISL competitions in our first year.  As I mentioned  to our skiers the first day, we will maintain an open door policy allowing new additions to join the program in the early season.  All comers welcome!!

Sociology of sport teaches us that young ladies and young men join teams for numerous reasons ( social interaction, competition, skill development, to be part of team, to learn a new sport, fitness, training for their main sport, fun, etc.) and cross-country skiing is not any different.  This lifelong sport offers its participants the potential to develop the physiological systems of the body, to set personal goals, to explore the beauty of the outdoors, to develop environmental awareness, and to enjoy the spirit of clean competition.

All athletes prepare short term and long term personal goals which seamlessly intertwine with our team goals.  The coaches will help all athletes reach their potential as skiers and citizens, while reflecting the schools mission statement in developing the academic and physical potential of all its students.  Our team mission statement centers on developing a respectful and diverse environment where each individual contributes to raising all members to the next level in a fun, dynamic and adventurous setting.

That said we will utilize the latest techniques in cross-country ski training, sound physiological training principles and innovative methods which will excite our skiers. Being involved in all facets of the sport for over 40 years has allowed our staff to develop a network of resources to draw upon for all of our needs.  Lastly, coach FitzPatrick has taught  5-6 year olds up to 75 years young and everyone in between, including high school, collegiate and US Ski Team level athletes.  Physical and cognitive readiness is different for all athletes, at all levels,  when connecting to a new sport and an individual approach is necessary to help all participants feel connected and enjoy this great sport.  Cross-country skiing is more than a sport, it is a lifestyle.
