The Middlesex Boys’ Lacrosse program maintains a long tradition of excellence. The team competes in the Independent School League (ISL), which is one of the most respected and competitive high school lacrosse leagues in the country. Since 1980, when Hall of Fame head coach Ned Herter ’73 began his coaching career, the varsity has compiled a record of 459-125 (79% winning percentage) and won 14 ISL championships (11 since 1989 when the league “officially” formed).
The keys to all of this success are the core values that the program teaches: respect, kindness, discipline, teamwork, competition, and joy. Our fundamental intention as coaches is to create an environment that allows our players to love the game of the lacrosse, to enjoy and savor their time on the field, and to establish longstanding and meaningful relationships. The Middlesex lacrosse "family," comprised of both current and past players, is an extraordinarily tight-knit group of individuals that learn the power of playing as a team. We believe that this unity and shared sense of purpose lies at the heart of the remarkable achievements that the program has collected over the years.
While the program has enjoyed success as a team, individual players have also been recognized for their achievements. Since 1980, 19 players have been recognized as high-school All Americans, and well over 100 players have graduated from Middlesex and continued to play in college. We have 16 alums playing in college currently (2024 / 2025 season). Over the years, graduates have played at both the Division 1 level (Boston University, Brown, Colgate, Dartmouth, Denver, Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, Holy Cross, Johns Hopkins, Lafayette, Marquette, Maryland, Ohio State, Providence, St. John's, University of Vermont, University of Virginia, Yale) and Division 2/3 level (Amherst, Babson, Bates, Bentley, Bowdoin, Connecticut, Colby, Colorado College, Denison, Dickinson, Hamilton, Middlebury, Oberlin, Sewanee, Skidmore, Swarthmore, Trinity, Tufts, Williams, Union). Four graduates – Dave Lawson ’09, TA Demoulas ’11, James Burr ‘15, and Sam Carlin ‘15 - played professionally in Major League Lacrosse. Notably, in 2013, Dave captained the Duke Blue Devils to the Division 1 National Championship and was a First Team All American. He then went on to play for Team USA, where he competed in the World Games in 2014, earning a spot on the All-World Team. Click here for a list of alums who have played in college.
Players come to Middlesex with varying degrees of experience – some have never played, while others have played for many years for their club and/or school. Our junior varsity team has also enjoyed consistent success over the years, and has been an important source of players for the varsity team. The varsity team begins each season with a week-long trip to Florida to train with Hogan Lacrosse.
At the end of the 2024 season, long-time head coach Doug Worthen ‘96 retired and handed off the program to one of his former players, Brian Powers ‘15. As a student at Middlesex, Brian was captain of 3 sports (soccer, hockey, lacrosse). Brian played lacrosse in college at Tufts, where he helped lead the Jumbos to 3 NESCAC Championships. After earning his B.A. from Tufts in 2019, he served as a graduate assistant coach at Tufts for 1 year while earning his Masters in Education. Brian then spent time teaching and coaching first at Moses Brown high school and then at Catholic Memorial high school, where he was twice recognized as Coach of the Year in the Catholic Conference. At Middlesex, Brian teaches English and is an assistant coach for the girls’ varsity soccer team. Brian is joined by long-time assistant coach Geoff Cohane ‘96. While at Middlesex, Geoff was a 3-sport captain (soccer, squash, lacrosse) and was recognized as All-American and ISL Player of the Year in lacrosse as a senior. Geoff played lacrosse in college at Williams, where he won 2 ECAC Championships and was named MVP of the 2000 ECAC Tournament. He was inducted into the Middlesex Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. Geoff is also a clinical psychologist, and he has a private practice in Concord and is the school psychologist at Fenn School. Brian and Geoff are joined by assistant coaches Jason Wellmeyer (founder of PrimeTime lacrosse), Chris Gelinas P’ 22 (coach with Laxachusetts), and James Cohane ‘92.
