WESTON, Mass. - Lily McTeague (North Reading, Mass.) banged home the championship winning goal with less than 90 seconds left in regulation, capping a memorable postseason run for No. 3 Middlesex, as the rallied past No. 4 Cushing, 2-1, in the NEPSAC Class B Field Hockey title game on Sunday afternoon at The Rivers School.
Middlesex entered the game having won their quarterfinal contest over Berkshire, 3-2 in overtime on Wednesday and then advanced to the championship following a double overtime comeback victory over Williston Northampton less than 24 hours ago.
Incredibly, the final 90 seconds of the championship game was the only time during the three postseason contests that the Zebras led with time on the clock.
The championship tilt was still scoreless until midway through the second quarter when Cushing executed a corner to perfection with the ball finding MacKenzie Babine who unleashed a rocket through traffic and into the back of the cage.
It looked as if the Penguins would go into halftime ahead, but Alex Hood (Winchester, Mass.) was able to slip one past the Cushing netminder with less than a minute left in the half to even the score.
The Zebras were set to take the lead with two minutes left in the contest when Hood's redirect got past the Penguin goalkeeper and was headed into the goal but a quick thinking Cushing defender swept the ball away for the defensive save.
The ensuing corner, however, was when the championship clinching play took place. Sarah Smith (Acton, Mass.) inserted the ball to
Avery Swenson (Concord, Mass.), who sent a pass to McTeague that she sent to home for the game winner.
Sunday's championship is the third in school history and second in the last three years (1999, 2023, 2025).
Middlesex finishes their season at 17-3 overall and riding an eight game winning streak.
