BYFIELD, Mass. - The Middlesex football team scored 21 unanswered points to win a hard fought battle with a tough Governors Academy team on Saturday, October 4. It was the first win of the season for Middlesex, bringing their record to 1-2.
The visitors took the opening kickoff and used ten plays to advance the ball to the Governors' 20 yard line but a 4th down pass was intercepted and Governors took over.
The ensuing drive took up the rest of the first quarter and into the second and after Governors converted a 3rd and goal from the one, they took a 7-0 lead with 9:55 remaining in the first half.
Â
After a pass attempt was ruled a fumble, Governors took over at the Middlesex 46 and struck again on a 27 yard touchdown pass. The extra point was blocked and Governors led 13-0 with just over two minutes left until halftime.
Middlesex executed their two minute offense well and drove the ball to the Governors 11 with five seconds left in the half. Kicker
Sam Elfner was sent on to get the Zebras some points but although his kick was good, a penalty against Governors left Middlesex with the option to take the points off the board and go for a touchdown. Middlesex made the aggressive choice and after another penalty against Governors moved the ball even closer to the goal line, running back
Frankie Forrest scored from four yards out, giving the Zebras a huge momentum boost and making the halftime score 13-7.
Â
Governors got the ball to start the second half but the Middlesex defense forced a turnover on downs at their own 39. The offense went back to work, driving the ball inside the Governors ten, including a huge 4th down conversion by Forrest. Quarterback
Luke Felago found
Nathan Keeler in the end zone for an eight yard score and Elfner's point after gave Middlesex the 14-13 lead with just over a minute left in the third quarter.
Â
Governors elected to go for it on 4th down from their own 32 on their next drive, but their pass attempt was incomplete. Middlesex then rode a heavy dose of Forrest to another touchdown when he dove in from two yards out and the Zebras had a 21-13 lead with eight minutes remaining in the contest.
The game wasn't over yet, however, as Governors advanced the ball to the Middlesex 26 in their attempt to tie the score but the Middlesex defense held and forced a turnover on downs. Forrest and the Middlesex offensive line then ran out the clock and the Zebras had their first win of the season.
Forrest finished the contest with 150 yards and two touchdowns.
Middlesex returns to action on Friday night when they travel to Brooks for a 6:30 PM contest.
