In monsoon conditions, the Middlesex football team fell behind early but came back to beat Brooks 21-13 in the ISL opener for both teams.
Brooks took the opening kickoff and took just a minute and 45 second to score a touchdown and quickly make the score 7-0. Middlesex was able to respond, however, taking possession at their own 41 yard line and putting together a nine play, 59 yard drive that culminated with a 12 yard touchdown pass on third down from Luke Felago to tight end Alex Clapp. Sam Elfner added the extra point to tie the score at 7-7 with 2:45 left in the opening quarter.
Brooks took possession with good field position near midfield, but Zebra linebacker Calb Mitchell forced a fumble and Orion Saunders pounced on the loose ball for the game's first turnover. The Middlesex offense could not take advantage, however, and Brooks regained the ball and needed just five plays to score their second touchdown. The extra point was no good, making the score 13-7 Brooks with 6:57 left in the first half. Neither team could mount any offense for the remainder of the half and the score remained 13-7 Brooks at halftime.
Middlesex drove the ball to the Brooks 19 yard line on their first possession of the second half but the drive stalled there. Fortunately, the Zebra defense created another turnover, as senior linebacker Luke Warzynski recovered a botched handoff in the Brooks backfield, giving Middlesex an instant red zone opportunity. The Zebras needed just two plays to find the end zone, with junior running back Frankie Forrest finding paydirt from 17 yards out. Elfner's extra point gave the Zebras their first lead at 14-13.
On the ensuring Brooks possession, the Zebra defense forced another turnover. This time it was senior safety Xavier Hazard picking off a pass near midfield and returning it to the Brooks 15 yard line. Forrest pounded in another touchdown from 8 yards out and the score was now 21-13 Middlesex with 3:48 left in the third quarter.
Brooks threatened to score on their next possession, driving inside the red zone but Saunders made a big tackle to stop a fourth down pass attempt a yard short. Middlesex attempted to run out the clock but Brooks got the ball back at their own 32 yard line with 2;27 remaining. The Middlesex defense was stout when it mattered most, stuffing a run for a 2 yard loss and then forcing three straight incompletions. It was victory formation from there as the Zebras grabbed a season opening win.Â
