The Varsity Volleyball squad came out swinging in their home opener against St. Marks, beating their first ISL opponent of the year in straight sets. Middlesex took control of the first set from the start with good play all around. They extended their lead in the middle of the set, bolstered by the front row, especially by middles Ela Sahin '28 and co-captain Alyssa Aslam '25, both of whom notched several blocks in set 1. The first set concluded 25-18.Â
St. Mark's made some adjustments in the second set, and their talented setter began to work strategically to get around the Zebras' block. St. Mark's caught Middlesex off balance and managed to pull ahead. But the Middlesex passers, led by libero Clara Szeman '27 and outside hitters Jackie Brown '25 and co-captain Charlotte Heafey '25, made the necessary adjustments to allow setters Clair Jennings '25 and Sarah McLaughlin '25 to run the offense. The two teams traded the lead several times through the final points of the set, but the Zebras came out on top 25-23.
Up 2 sets to 0, Middlesex came out strong from the start in the third set. Another service run by Sarah opened up the Zebras' lead, which they maintained through the end of the set, which ended 25-16.
Middlesex looks to carry their momentum to their next ISL match against Tabor Academy next Wednesday, 9/25.
