The Middlesex Varsity Football team traveled to St. George's on November 9 with the hope of defeating their rivals and ending the regular season on a 5 game winning streak but the Dragons had other ideas and St. George's prevailed 14-6 in a defensive struggle.
St. George's took the opening kickoff and advanced to the edge of the red zone before the Middlesex defense tightened and forced a turnover on downs. The Middlesex offense could muster just one first down on their ensuing drive and was forced to punt.
St. George's scampered for 50 yards on the first play of the next possession, setting themselves up at the Middlesex 15. They eventually punched the ball in to take a 7-0 lead.
Middlesex advanced the ball to the St. George's 28 on their next possession but a 4th down interception turned the ball over to St. George's. Neither team did anything on its next possession and St. George's took over on their own 22 yard line.
Senior linebacker TJ Kane changed the momentum of the game with an interception on the drive's first play, returning the ball to the St. George's 2 yard line. Middlesex was held until 4th down, when Xavier Hazard scored on a 1 yard run. The snap on the extra point was dropped and St. George's had a 7-6 lead, which held until halftime.
Middlesex managed just one first down on the opening drive of the second half and St. George's went on a 12 play, 61 yard drive that ate up most of the third quarter and put the Dragons up 14-6.
Middlesex had two more possessions in the game but the St. George's defense was stout and lead them to a 14-6 win.
Despite the loss, Middlesex finished the season with a record of 6-2, a 4 win improvement over the previous year. The team also qualified for the Joe Lang Bowl, named in honor of Middlesex's head coach from 1996-2021, which will be played on Saturday, November 16 at 1:30 pm at home against Berkshire.
