Varsity Football Moves to 5-1 With Win at Thayer

10/27/2024 9:32:00 PM

For the second consecutive week, the Middlesex football team mounted a fourth quarter comeback and posted a road victory, this time 21-16 over Thayer. The win pushed the Zebras record to 5-1 on the season.

Middlesex recovered a fumble on the first play from scrimmage and the Zebras advanced deep into Thayer territory but a fumble of their own cost Middlesex a chance at points. Middlesex forced a punt on the subsequent drive and the Zebras blocked it, as senior Owen Crann got home and Middlesex was set up inside the red zone with 6 minutes remaining in the opening quarter. This time the Zebras capitalized, as quarterback Luke Felago hit wide receiver Orion Saunders with an 8 yard TD pass and Sam Elfner added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Thayer responded by driving down the field and scoring on a 20 yard touchdown pass. They also converted the two point conversion to take an 8-7 lead with 10:28 remaining in the first half. After a Middlesex punt, Thayer drove inside the Middlesex 10 yard line but the Zebra defense made a big stop, thwarting the Tigers on 4th down with less than a minute to go in the half, thereby keeping the score at 8-7 at halftime.

Middlesex drove to the Thayer 33 on the opening drive of the second half but the drive stalled and the ball was turned over on downs. Neither team mounted much offense for the rest of the quarter and the score remained 8-7 Thayer heading into the final quarter.

On the second play of the fourth quarter, Felago hit Saunders on a 4th and 9 completion for a 33 yard gain to the Thayer 12 yard line. Three plays later, Xavier Hazard scored from 10 yards out and Middlesex took a 14-6 lead with 8:02 left to play.

Middlesex took over on downs at the Thayer 32 after a 4th and 2 stop on the ensuing drive and seemingly iced the game on a 3 yard TD run by Frankie Forrest with 3:38 to play that gave the Zebras a 21-8 advantage.

Thayer would not go quietly, however, and the Tigers drove 80 yards in just one minute and 19 seconds and their touchdown and two point conversion shrunk the Middlesex lead to 21-16 with 2:09 left.

The Thayer onside kick attempt went out of bounds and the Middlesex offense got the first down it needed to run out the clock and secure the victory. The Zebras return to action on Friday, November 1 when they host Groton at 2:30.
