10/21/2024 12:21:00 PM

The Middlesex Varsity Football team scored 17 unanswered points in the second half to erase a 14-7 deficit and come away with a scintillating 24-14 victory over St. Mark's in ISL Football action on Saturday, October 19. The Zebras improved to 4-1 on the season with the win.

St. Mark's received the opening kickoff and the Middlesex defense pushed them backwards in forcing a three and out and setting up the offense with a short field. The Zebras drove 36 yards and took a 7-0 lead on 1 19 yard touchdown pass from Luke Felago to Xavier Hazard.

St. Mark's responded with two big play touchdowns to take a 14-7 lead into halftime. Middlesex went three and out on the opening drive of the second half and St. Mark's was poised to take control of the game as they advanced into the red zone on their next possession. The defense provided a big play when it was needed, as safety Frankie Forrest caused a fumble and Hazard scooped it up and returned it to the St. Mark's 37 yard line.

The Zebras were able to pick up a couple of first downs but were unable to punch it in for the tying score. The defense stepped up again, however, tacking St. Mark's for a loss on third and short and setting up a punt attempt from the end zone. The snap was low and the St. Mark's punter went to a knee in the end zone, causing a safety and two points for Middlesex to make the score 14-9.

The ensuing Middlesex drive ended with an interception near the goal line. The Zebra defense remained stout, with another stop on third and short forcing a punt, which was subsequently blocked by junior defensive lineman Josh Richards, setting Middlesex up inside the red zone. The Zebras converted on fourth down as Felago again hit Hazard with a touchdown pass that put Middlesex up 15-14. Forrest converted the two point conversion to give the Zebras a 17-14 lead with 4:51 remaining in the game. Middlesex's defense forced an immediate turnover on downs the offense iced the game with a 17 yard touchdown scamper by Forrest.

Middlesex returns to action on October 26 when they travel to Thayer for a 3:00 game.
