After a long week of exams, Middlesex Girls' Varsity Hockey traveled to Brookline for a weekend of games at the Dexter Southfield Holiday Tournament. First up, the Zebras played perennial powerhouse Hill School on Friday afternoon. Hill took a 2-0 lead after the first period, moving the puck quickly and pushing the pace of play. Middlesex cut the lead in half in the second off a gritty goal from sophomore Cassidy Bruno, assisted by senior Katie Athanasoulas. The Zebras picked up the pace and had several quality chances as the period came to a close but Hill found the back of the net again to enter the second intermission up 3-1. MX came out flying in the third as Lily McTeague '26 cut the lead to one again off a laser pass from Lucy McGaraghan '27. Hill scored once more for a 4-2 final. Viv Milosavljevic-Cook '25 was stellar in net.Â
Saturday morning, Middlesex traveled to Rivers to play the Red Wings for game two of the tournament. The Zebras started a bit slow in the first allowing Rivers to control the game. After two goals by the hosts in the first, MX regrouped and tested the Rivers goalie throughout the second period but ultimately were held scoreless. The third period was back and forth as both teams spent time in the box but Rivers managed to notch a final goal on the powerplay for a 3-0 final.Â
Saturday afternoon, MX traveled back to Dexter Southfield to face the tournament hosts. After a scoreless first period, Middlesex struggled to play together and Dexter capitalized. While the effort was there, it was a dissapointing result for the Zebras.Â
Entering Sunday as the No. 4 seed from Pool A, MX faced the No. 4 seed from Pool B Brooks. Middlesex dominated play from the first puck drop, with quality chances throughout the first period but the Brooks goalie kept the Zebras in the hunt. In the second, Lily McTeague '25 sniped a beauty from the hashmarks top corner to give Middlesex the lead. In the final minutes of the game, MX took a penalty and Brooks pulled their goalie for a 6v4 and ultimately found the back of the net to tie the game with 20 seconds to play. After 5 minutes of 3v3 overtime, the game ended in a hard-fought tie.Â
For her efforts all weekend, Lily McTeague was named to the All-Tournament team!
Middlesex will return to the ice on January 3 in South Burlington, Vermont when they face Rice Memorial Prep.Â
