The Varsity Volleyball team took down Dexter Southfield in a home game on Saturday, November 4, winning 3-1 in front of a loud and supportive home crowd Herd.
Middlesex began the first well and quickly opened up a 10-5 lead with offensive contributions from Parker Boyden '23, Julie Chen '23, Devon Coyle '24, Annabelle Lerner '23, Charlotte Heafey '25, and Caroline Cervini '23. Romy Ahn '23, Tem Taepaisitphongse '23, Julie, and Charlotte also limited their opponents 'attacks with strong defensive work in the back line. The Zebras impressed with their teamwork and continued to extend the lead throughout the set. The set closed at 25-15 and featured aces by Tem, Charlotte, and Devon.
In the second set, Middlesex made a few changes to the lineup as Dela McCaghren '24, Alyssa Aslam '25, as well as Moran Liu '26, who made her Middlesex debut, took to the court. The Zebras opened the set with a strong 8-2 lead on a serving run by Julie before a timeout was called. As the set went on, the scoreline grew tighter, and Dexter jumped out to a lead in the middle of the set capitalizing on unforced errors by the Zebras, which included eight missed serves. Middlesex remained resilient and managed to catch up and tie the score at 23-23. However, Dexter Southfield bounced back to win the next two points and the set at 25-23.
The Zebras were committed to sharpening their game and reducing unforced errors in the third set, quickly jumping out to a 5-2 lead, which was extended to 11-5 after a serving run by Romy. Middlesex managed to maintain the pressure, and after Dexter SOuthfiled earned the sideout after a timeout, it was Tem's turn to go on a serving run building up a 18-6 Middlesex lead. The Zebras continued to impress with high quality volleyball as they rolled to a 25-11 set win..Â
The Zebras did not let up as the fourth set began. With Caroline at the line, the team opened with eight straight points to establish control of the match. The team morale remained high and the lead continued to grow throughout the set. The Zebras' efforts led to a 25-13 set win, which featured aces by Julie, Caroline, Charlotte, and Tem, as well as a block by Parker.
With this tenth win in a row, Middlesex improves its record to 12-1 (8-1 ISL). All attention now shifts to Wednesday, November 9, which is also Senior Day for Middlesex, when the Zebras will host the Buckingham Browne & Nichols School in a showdown between the top two teams in the ISL, which will likely determine the outcome of the 2022 league championship. We are hoping a large home crowd will show up to support the team in this pivotal match.
