Varsity Football Battles Govs on Family Weekend

10/25/2022 9:48:00 AM

On a chilly, brisk Family Weekend afternoon, Middlesex Varsity Football took the field versus Governor's. Once again, it was the opponent's run game that proved crucial in the match; between the blazing speed and resolute strength of Gov's' running back, MX's defense had a difficult time catching up, let alone bringing the man down. Using their dominant running to force MX into heavyset box formations, Gov's was able to isolate their receivers 1-on-1 to quickly score on their first drive with a short pass. This strategy continued throughout the game with much success, save an interception by AliJah Clark '23 in the second half.

However, as has become a common theme this season, the MX special teams unit brought fire, grit, and determination, as Clark '23 deflected the pass attempt on Gov's 2-point conversion. After a moment of confusion, the senior DB/WR realized that the pass was backwards, and thus a live ball, after which he scooped it up and turned on the jets, taking it the length of the field to score before MX's offense stepped onto the field. Alas, the home offense continued to struggle to find any groove throughout the game: screen passes were repeatedly blown up behind the line of scrimmage, Gov's taking advantage of their defensive size to quickly shed blocks and stuff the ball carrier. The only exception to this theme was when, midway through the 3rd quarter, Clark '23 once again tapped into his sub-11 100M speed to burn past defenders following a broken tackle in the backfield and go 80 yards for his first touchdown of the season. On the following drive, QB Ty Fein capitalized on the momentum to duck through the defense on a 1 yards sneak TD.

Sadly, these would prove to be Middlesex's only scores, and it was not enough to overcome Gov's' offensive machine, as the Zebras fell to the visitors, 14-34.
