Middlesex faced the Groton School on Friday, October 14 in a thrilling home game. As nearly all the school's athletic teams engaged in spirited competition against "the other Zebras," the Varsity Volleyball team did its part in defeating the long-time rival, 3-0.
Despite the added pressure of the rivalry, the first set served as an opportunity for Middlesex to establish itself on the court as they opened up an 12-4 lead displaying strong chemistry on the court. Assisted by Caroline Cervini '23, Parker Boyden '23, Julie Chen '23, Devon Coyle '24, and Charlotte Heafey '25 were consistent with keeping offensive pressure and finding gaps in Groton's defense. Charlotte and Romy Ahn '23 lead the defense in asurring dominance throughout the set. Annabelle Lerner '23 and Parker provided blocks, while Charlotte and Caroline provided aces. Middlesex's consistency allowed them to close the set at 25-15.
The second set maintained the tone of dominance for the hosts. Charlotte and Caroline were joined by Tem Taepaisitphongse '23 and Romy to serve tough against Groton, accumulating several aces. Middlesex quickly opened up another large lead of 11-3 before Groton had to call a timeout. Middlesex did not let this disrupt their momentum, as they maintained and extended the lead throughout the set, eventually closing it at 25-11. The set also featured blocks from Annabelle and Parker.Â

The motivation to win the Zebra rivalry kept Middlesex hungry for a win, and they did not consider it a done match just yet as the third set began. Middlesex maintained control of the rallies even as Groton's powerful outside hitter did her best to push the defense. Parker continued to block consistently, as did Charlotte and Devon. Romy and Charlotte continued to deliver clean passes, allowing Julie, Parker, Annabelle, Charlotte, and Devon to maintain offensive pressure and drive the team forward. Although the scoreline in this set was closer, momentum was strong for Middlesex and they were able to close the set at 25-22.
The win concluded a short, but successful week for the Zebras. The Middlesex players now enjoy a long weekend before preparing for another big week. Next, Middlesex (7-1; 5-1 ISL) will travel across town to Concord Academy for an away match on Wednesday, October 18.
