Varsity Football Edged at Lawrence, 13-12

9/30/2019 1:20:00 PM

Heading into Lawrence Academy, coming off a first game 0-0 tie with Roxbury Latin, our goal was to continue the inspired play of our defense while opening up the offense.  The offense responded on our opening drive, with both the running and passing game contributing to our first score.  The offensive line (Wes Capitani '20, Kevin Ma '22, Aaron Peroni '20, Nick DeBruin '22, Peter Sleeper '22 and Sahnai Swain-Price '21) opened holes for tailback Colin Cunningham '20, and quarterback Cole Cleary '20 connected on passes to Cedrick Paradis '20, Cal Fries '20 and finally a 27 yard TD strike to Cole Nye '20. The PAT was blocked giving MX a 6-0 lead.  Both defenses settled in after this drive and even though MX threatened just before halftime, penalties prevented MX from adding to the lead.

Our defensive unit kept Lawrence scoreless into the fourth quarter.  Defensive ends Mike Conde '20 and Julian Farr '20 contained and pressured the QB all afternoon while the interior defense (Wes Capitani, Kevin Ma, Nick DeBruin, Sahnai Swain Price and Axel Romell '21) shut down their run game. The secondary also chipped in with interceptions by outside linebacker Joe Belsanti '21 and cornerback Cedrick Paradis.

A penalty assisted drive aided Lawrence to their first score, on a four yard run and with the PAT, they took a 7-6 lead.  Middlesex answered immediately on their next drive, as the offense again went to the air, ending with a 31 yard TD strike from Cleary to Nye. The 2 point try failed but MX reclaimed the lead 12-7. Unfortunately, Lawrence's passing game which was shut down all afternoon caught a break on their next drive and connected on a long gain, which put them deep in our territory. This led to a 3 yard TD but failed on the 2 point try giving Lawrence a slim 13-12 lead.  The offense had one more try with under 2 minutes to go but a turnover in Lawrence's end of the field ended the game.

The team comes home next weekend to face St. Mark's at 3:00 pm.
