On a hot and humid day, the Middlesex Varsity Field Hockey team welcomed Dexter Southfield to the Landry turf for the home opener. Middlesex started the game on fire, controlling the play and keeping the ball in the opponent's defensive end. Eight minutes into the game, the Zebras put in their first goal of the season off of a shot from first-year Emma Poplyk, which was re-deflected twice, by first-year Sage Piekarski and senior Syd MacKeigan. However, in the second half, Dexter Southfield picked up their pace, putting the Zebras on their heels. With 10 minutes remaining in the game, Dexter Southfield put one in the back of the cage, evening the score at 1-1. The game went into overtime, with both teams feeling the humidity. However, the Zebra's created many scoring opportunities on fast breaks, and ultimately prevailed by putting a lifted shot past the Dexter Southfield goalie with four minutes remaining in overtime. The Zebra's are excited to travel to New Hampton on Saturday to face a top Class-C team.
