Varsity Football Defeats Rivers, 39-8

11/4/2019 10:32:00 AM

The rainy conditions all week leading up to the River's game looked like it would produce challenging field conditions at game time.  But the heavy winds on Friday into Saturday and sunshine all Saturday morning worked wonders to dry the field out resulting in excellent footing by game time.  MX took immediate advantage of the conditions, with the defense stopping Rivers first drive deep in their own territory and turning it over to the offense in excellent field position.  The offense wasted little time, running behind the blocking of the offensive line (Wes Capitani '20, Kevin Ma '22, Aaron Peroni '20, Nick DeBruin '22, Peter Sleeper '22, and Sahnai Swain-Price '21) tailback Colin Cunningham '20 started the scoring on a 22-yard run and Liam Connor '22 added the PAT for a 7-0 lead. The MX offense would add two more touchdowns in the second quarter.  First, a 54-yard TD strike from quarterback Cole Cleary '20 to wide receiver Cole Nye '20.  An errand snap and great reactions produced a 2-point PAT on a scramble pass from Cleary to Nye. Cunningham would end the next MX drive on an impressive 31-yard touchdown run, upping the MX lead to 22-0 at halftime. The defense (Michael Conde '20, Wes Capitani '20, Nick DeBruin '22, Kevin Ma '22, Peter Sleeper '22, Aaron Peroni '20, Julian Farr '20 on the line. Linebackers Liam Alley '21, Axel Romell '21, Sahnai Swain-Price '21 and Joey Belsanti '21 and defensive backs Cole Nye '20, Colin Cunningham '20 and Cedrick Paradis '20) continued to play shutout football in the second half. Tight end Sahnai Swain-Price '21 opened the second half scoring on a 49-yard play action pass from Cole Cleary.  Rivers would catch a break at the end of the third quarter when an MX pass tipped off our receiver and River's was able to return it for a touchdown.  Placekicker Liam Connor would add another lengthy field goal of 42 yards (following up on his record setting 49-yard field goal last week) to make the score 32-8 at the end of the third quarter.  Connor was perfect on his PAT kicks for the day and launched three kick offs into the end zone. The final score of the day came off a quick pass from quarterback Cam Fries '22, on a third and twelve, that wide receiver Mark Conde '22 took to the house for a final score of 39-8.  The team will head into their final regular season game against archrival St. George's, this Saturday at home at 2:00 pm.
