The Girls' Varsity Volleyball squad, only two days after finalizing their roster, hosted the Pingree Highlanders on Wednesday, September 12. After cheering the JV to victory, the varsity team took the court. Nerves were apparent early on, as the young team looked to find their footing in their first competitive match of the season and in many of their first-ever varsity start.
Despite the 0-3 score, the team and coaches were encouraged by flashes of great play by everyone on the court. Setter Sophia Poplyk '21 and middle hitter Natalie McCall '21 each notched 4 aces, while outside hitters Mayu Lee '20 and senior captain Hadley Jevon '19 each scored 5 kills. Middle Kiley Briand put away 4 kills while also acing a serve. The game also featured the varsity debuts of freshman setter Sofia Dickinson, who was able to run the offense under pressure, and of sophomore defensive specialist Emily Pyne, who stepped in during the third set to play middle back. Libero Angela Bi '21 was able to anchor the defense throughout the match, while defensive specialist Sevilla Jin '21 had the play of the day with a spectacular pancake to dig up a well-placed Pingree tip.
The team looks forward to the next week's work in practice and scrimmages, which will include the ISL Jamboree on Saturday, September 15 and a scrimmage against Bedford High School on Monday, September 17. Their next match will be on Thursday, September 20, as they travel to Newton Country Day for a 4:45pm start.
