4/8/2018 8:25:00 AM

The Girls' Varsity Tennis team lost its season opener 7 - 8 against fellow ISL school St. Mark's in a nailbiter that went down to the final doubles matches for the overall match to be determined. The sun came out this morning and dried off the home courts in time for the match to be played outside with cool temperatures and a bit of wind.

Captain Helen Lasry '18 led the Zebra's singles lineup at #1, clinching both points for her team 6-3, 6-3. Maud McCole '19 played a competitive first set, ultimately losing the tiebreaker 2-7. Coming out more determined to finish her strokes and take control of the point, she outhit her opponent to win the second set handily 6-1. With many game scores going to deuce, sophomore Averill Emery '20 played a fierce match at #5, splitting sets with her opponent 6-3, 2-6. Rookie freshman Parker Firestone '21 played a composed, consistent match at #6 singles. She won the first set 6-3 and outlasted her opponent in a tiebreaker 8-6 in the second set. The overall match was tied as the players headed into doubles. Lasry and McCole showed their experience on the court at #1 doubles, playing an aggressive match with good teamwork to win the set 8 - 3.

The team will put in two focused practices this week before hosting Tabor Academy on Wednesday.
