The Girls' Varsity Tennis team won its match against Tabor Wednesday 11 - 4. The Zebras traveled to Marion, Mass., bundled up for chilly temperatures with sunny skies overhead. Matches at all positions were competitive; Middlesex played especially well on the high pressure points, capturing all three of the tiebreaker sets.
Senior captain Helen Lasry '18 headed the singles ladder at #1 singles in a re-match against last year's opponent she lost to at #2. She was down 3 - 5 in the first set but fought her way back into a tie-breaker by attacking her opponent's backhand, and she won, securing the point for her team! While Lasry continued the dogfight after the set break, her opponent returned with renewed determination, and alas, Lasry was ultimately outlasted in the second set. Maud McCole '19 took control of the match from the outset at #2 singles. She secured both sets handily 6 - 2, 6 - 2. Miranda Fiore '19 at #3 singles played a characteristically tenacious, conservative game, getting to each ball and patiently returning every shot with consistency and precision. She took her first set 6 - 4. Her opponent came back out in the second set ready to battle and had a lead for the first half of the set. Fiore was not going to let the point slip; she pushed her way back into a tiebreaker, which she won 7 - 4. Despite being off to a bit of a slow start to her first set, Madeline Graham '18 did her best to stay with her opponent and was energized in her tiebreaker. She successfully leaned into the pressure and bagged the point for the Zebras 7 - 5. Graham also made important strategic adjustments in the second set to unravel her opponent's net game and won the set 6 - 2. Averill Emery '20 honed her mental game during her match to maintain consistency and win both of her sets 7 - 5, 6 - 4. At #6, Parker Firestone '21 split sets in a competitive back and forth match.

The overall match was secured after singles 10 - 2 as the players went out for doubles. Firestone and rookie partner Jessica Andrews '21 used good teamwork with Andrews's volley attacks and Firestone's powerful groundstrokes to win their set 8 - 5.Â
The team plans to head over to Concord Academy tomorrow afternoon to face the Chameleons.Â
