Varsity Football Defeats St. George's

11/17/2018 9:52:00 AM

The wind off the ocean was howling when we arrived in Newport.  We thought we got to St. George's early enough to walk around and get the long bus ride out of our legs, but unfortunately we did not do enough walking because St. George's jumped out to a quick 14-0 first quarter lead.  Thankfully, our team regrouped, and led by the defensive unit who kept us in games all season (Michael Conde '20, Wes Capitani '20, Alek Kebabjian '20, Mark Portlock '20, Julian Farr '20 up front- Max Bensley '21, Sahnai Swain-Price '21, Axel Romell '21, Liam Alley '21 the linebacker corps- and Cole Nye '20, Cedrick Paradis '20, Oliver Quon '19, Joey Belsanti '21, Colin Cunningham '20 in the secondary), they shut out St George's the rest of the game.

While the defense was holding down the fort, our punt team came up with the spark we needed, as Joey Belsanti '21 recovered a fumble on the kick, which gave the offense outstanding field position.  Then led by the blocking of the offensive line (Peter Sleeper '22. Wes Capitani '20, Aaron Peroni '20, Alex Flynn '19 and Nick DeBruin '22), the MX offense started to exploit our running game and exploded for 21 points in the second quarter. All three touchdowns were scored by captain Kabelo Tsotetsi '19 on runs of 18, 34 and 7 yards, respectively, allowing the MX 11 to recapture the lead at halftime 21-14.  The third quarter was back and forth with neither team being able to score. But early in the 4th quarter, on a fumble recovery by cornerback Colin Cunningham '20, the MX offense scored again on a 1 yard plunge by quarterback Cole Cleary '20. Liam Connor's '22 4th PAT kick of the afternoon moved the MX lead to 28-14. Late in the 4th quarter, St. George's mounted an offensive drive but it was halted once they crossed the 50 yard line on a 54 yard interception return for a touchdown by linebacker Sahnai Swain-Price '21, which ended the scoring and secured the victory and a Silver Football for the 2018 Middlesex Football Team.

A special note to all our players for the many contributions they made to the Middlesex Football tradition this season and a huge thank you to all our parents and fans for their continued support.
