Varsity Football Tops St. Mark's 30-14

10/12/2018 11:15:00 AM

Our St. Mark's game began on an overcast afternoon in Southborough. The MX offense started the scoring on their first series. With a third and 12, quarterback Cole Cleary '20 connected with tight end Sahnai Swain-Price '21, who after the catch rumbled for 60 yards to the St. Mark's 11 yard line.  Halfback Kabelo Tsotetsi '19 ran the ball to the 2 yard line and Cleary finished the drive with a TD pass to wide receiver Cal Fries '20. The PAT was blocked but MX held an early 6-0 lead.

St. Mark's answered quickly with a scoring drive of their own, as the MX defense was adjusting to St. Mark's game plan but a stop on their 2 point try kept the score at 6-6.  From this point on MX took control of the game, with the offense scoring twice in the second quarter on two TD passes from Cleary to wide receiver Cole Nye '20 of 16 and 11 yards.  Although St. Mark's was able to move the ball, the MX defense always seemed to find a way to stop their drives and maintain a halftime lead of 20-6.

For the second week in a row the defensive unit played an outstanding game.  Members of the defense include Julian Farr '20, Wes Capitani '20, Alek Kebabjian '20 and Michael Conde '20 on the line. The linebacking crew received added experience this week as captain Kabelo Tsotetsi '19 joined Axel Romell '21, Sahnai Swain-Price '21, Max Bensley '21, with a secondary of Cedrick Paradis '20, Joey Belsanti '21, Cole Nye '20 and receiving reinforcement from captain Oliver Quon '19.

The MX defense jump started the offense early in the second half when they recovered a St. Mark's fumble, which led to a 22 yard field goal by Liam Connor '22. The MX offense finished their scoring at the end of the third quarter when captain Tsotetsi, who handled the bulk of run game all afternoon, scored on a 2 yard run.  Connor would add the PAT and finish the day with 6 points on a field goal and 3 PATs.   St. Mark's would add a touchdown in the fourth quarter to make the final score MX 30-St. Mark's 14.

Credit for this win also has to go to our offensive lines who protected quarterback Cole Cleary, as he threw for 268 yards.  The offensive line:  Peter Sleeper '22, Wes Capitani '20, Michael Conde '20, Aaron Peroni '20, Alex Flynn '19 and Nick DeBruin '22.  Our next game will be this coming Friday afternoon against Groton at 2:00.
