Girls' Varsity Tennis stepped back into the ISL to beat Govs 11 - 4 Wednesday, continuing its streak with 5 wins in a row. It was the last home match for this year's seniors Sophia Corning, Laura Kaye, and Caroline Reynolds (captain).Â
Â
Helen Lasry '18 stepped up to play #1 singles; she led the Zebras to take 10 out of the possible 12 singles points and clinch the overall match before heading into doubles. Reynolds at #2, Maud McCole '19 at #3, Miranda Fiore '19 at #4, Kaye at #5, and Madeline Graham '18 at #6 all swept their sets in competitive individual matches. After winning the first set 6 - 3, Fiore was down 4 - 5 in the second when she won the next game. Her opponent won the following game to 5 - 6, and Miranda did what it took to take the contest into a tiebreaker. The rivals kept spectators on edge as they battled each point back and forth until the 7-point tiebreaker was finally settled by Miranda 14 - 12 -- what a fight!
Â
Senior duo Corning and Reynolds fought a hard doubles match at #1, and the final score of 2 - 6 does not show how well the girls worked together in each point and each game. Lasry and Kaye paired up at #2 and struggled to gain momentum against the powerful Governor's twosome, dropping the set 2 - 8 as well. #3 team Averill Emery '20 and Margaret Rand '19 proved once again to be a fierce pairing at #3 doubles, winning the point for the Zebras 8 - 2.Â
Â
The team will hold its traditional mixed doubles tournament with the boys and enjoy one more practice as a team before traveling to Rhode Island to compete against St. George's Saturday for its last match of the 2017 season. The team's record is currently 8 - 7 overall and 5 - 5 in the ISL.
