Boys' Varsity Lacrosses Edges St. George's

5/30/2017 1:56:00 PM

It was a typical trap game as we were coming off our very best game of the season on Wed. versus Governor's and the chance of us capturing the same emotional high was slim. With our first game on grass of the season, both teams were battling long wet grass and mud and were struggling to find their footing. At the end of the first quarter, Nick Buonanno buried two shots on feeds from James Sanderson and Sam Dwinell. We scored three more early in the second by Garrity-Rokous, Hickey, and another from Buonanno. This must have poked the sleeping Dragon as St. G's came back with two before half and we went into the half 6-2. St. G's scored another early in the third period, which sparked Stew Hickey to get two of his own putting us up 8-3. The Dragons began to creep back with two in the third to cut the margin to four goals. Early in the fourth, the flags flew and put us in the box a few times whereby St. George's scored two man up goals, making the score 8-6 and cut it to one with seven minutes left. At six minutes left in the game St. George's tied the game at eight apiece and had the momentum in their favor. Each team had oppoprtunities thwarted by the respective goalies. Colin Bailey had two huge saves down the stretch to keep the game knotted. Finally, Nick Buonanno scored his fourth goal and eventual game winner!!! I let out a huge sigh of relief when the final horn sounded to give us the win and a 9-6 season record. I am very proud of the boys for their efforts all season and thankful they let me retire with a win. That will feel so much better for the next twenty or thirty years!!
