The Girls' Varsity Tennis celebrated its fourth consecutive win after beating Tabor Academy this weekend 9 - 6. Conditions were sunny and a bit windy with temperatures in the 60s down in Marion, Mass. Players and spectators enjoyed a beautiful day for tennis.
The Zebras were off to a slow start, winning only half of the available first sets. Fortunately, our singles lineup found its rhythm in the second sets, securing 5 out of 6 points and clinching the overall match before moving into doubles. At #1 singles, senior Sophia Corning lost her first set, but came back out determined to play her best and win in the second; she split sets with her opponent. Captain Caroline Reynolds '17 showed off her arsenal of tactics to keep her opponent guessing and swept sets at #3. Maud McCole '18 at #4 struck a fine balance between consistency and aggressiveness to capture both sets for her team. Miranda Fiore '18 proved to be a wall in both sets at #5, getting to every ball and pressuring her opponent to commit the errors; she bagged both sets handily. Senior Laura Kaye played a competitive first set, adjusting to an elbow injury, and ultimately dropped it. She modified her strategy in the second set to outmaneuver her rival and take the point.
Competitive points were played in doubles at #1 and #2 but the Zebras were overpowered by their competition. Averill Emery '20 and partner Margaret Rand '18 combined strong serves and aggressive tactics at net to win their set 8 - 4.
The players are feeling improvement off their hard work this season and will put in two more practices before playing Governor's Academy on Wednesday. With just two matches left in the season, Middlesex's record is currently 7 - 7.
