Girls' Varsity Tennis Edged at Thayer

4/22/2017 12:07:00 PM

The Middlesex Girls' Varsity Tennis team lost its match against Thayer 7 - 8. Due to rainy court conditions, the match was moved to the indoor courts at the Weymouth Club.
Our singles lineup was led by junior Helen Lasry at #1 whose set scores did not truly show how competitive each point and game were played. Senior Caroline Reynolds (c) played an energetic game at #2, employing the best court mobility and balance of power and consistency we have seen from her this season; she split sets with her opponent. At #4, Miranda Fiore '19 showed off her ability to turn defense into offense with determination to go after every ball and outmaneuver her challenger, as she swept her sets. Madeline Graham '18 battled out a competitive first set that went into a tiebreaker. Both girls refused to let up as they each did their best to keep their opponent on the move. Madeline came out on top of the tie break 7 - 5 and took the set. The grind continued into the second set, but ultimately Madeline outlasted her rival to capture the second set 6 - 3. Freshman Averill Emery played an aggressive first set at #6 singles, but ultimately lost 5 -7. She came back, however, to win the second set and keep MX in the game.
The overall match was tied as the teams went into doubles. Fierce matches were played at #1 and #2, but the Zebras did not manage to clinch the pressure points to take the sets needed. At #3, Averill Emery and Margaret Rand '19 were ruthless at net and consistent at baseline to win their set 8 - 6.
With team injuries and each girl charged with playing up a position, overall the team left satisfied that each played her best on that day. The team is feeling the improved fitness and consistency in skill from the first weeks of tennis training. Our seniors look forward to their prom, and the others will rest this weekend. The team will reconvene next week to put in two focused practices before facing Lawrence Academy Wednesday.
