Girls' Varsity Tennis Wins Season Opener Against St. Mark's

4/10/2017 9:53:00 AM

The Girls' Varsity Tennis team won their season opener 12 - 3 against fellow ISL school St. Mark's. Despite the cool temperatures and windy court conditions, our athletes were glad to play the match outdoors.
With school pride and team spirit in their hearts, all girls on the day's roster scored at least a point for Middlesex School. Led by Helen Lasry '18 at #1, the Zebras' captured 9 out of 12 singles points and secured the overall match before heading into doubles. Lasry and senior captain Caroline Reynolds split sets with their opponents at the top. Maud McCole '19, who impressively stepped up to the #3 singles position after playing #8 on last year's roster, rookie sophomore Miranda Fiore, and Madeline Graham '18 (also new this year) all captured both of their singles sets. Freshman rookie hailing from the Czech Republic, Averill Emery had a competitive match at #6 singles, splitting sets.
At #1 doubles, Lasry and Reynolds played an aggressive and energetic game, winning the match 8 - 3. McCole and Graham combined strong baseline groundstrokes and a strategic net game with quick, agile volleys to take their set 8 - 5 at #2. Emery teamed up with sophomore rookie Margaret Rand at #3 to defeat their opponents 9 - 7 in a hard-fought set, clinching the doubles sweep for the Zebras.
The team will celebrate its victory this weekend and plan to put in two focused practices before hosting St. Paul's Wednesday.
