The Middlesex girls' hockey team faced another nail biter against a strong Rivers team but came up short in the final seconds of the game. Rivers got on the board ten minutes into the first period but Middlesex battled back to hold them for the rest of the period. As the players returned to the ice for the start of the second period, the robust cheering of the home crowd energized the Middlesex team, and the players played with fire and grit everywhere on the ice. Early in the second period, Middlesex scored short-handed on the penalty kill when Izzy Allieri aggressively pressured Rivers on their breakout, stole the puck, and fed it to Kiley Briand who buried the puck in the back of the net to tie the game. Rivers tallied another goal later in the period to go ahead 2-1. From the drop of the puck in the third period, Middlesex attacked Rivers relentlessly all over the ice and quickly tied the game while on the power play. Izzy Allieri tucked the puck in the net after receiving the puck from Ali Joseph and Kiley Briand. Both teams battled back and forth in the waning minutes of the third, but Rivers got the go ahead goal in the final seconds of the period. It certainly was a heartbreaking end to the game, but Middlesex played an outstanding game and the fans refused to stop cheering for the team until they had left the ice. Middlesex will next face off against Groton at the Southfield Holiday Tournament on December 15.
