Middlesex's offensive unit took over this week at RL, as our pass and run games combined for over 400 yards. The early scoring did not favor the MX 11, as a fumble recovery on a punt return opened the scoring for RL and an 8-0 lead. On the next offensive possession, however, Middlesex picked up the pace and after a couple of first down runs, captain Cormac Duhamel '18 broke a 49 yard run up the middle and a Pat McGann '18 kick tightened the 1st quarter score to 8-7. RL's pass game then started to click as they completed two drives with touchdown passes.
Although the Middlesex offense went up and down the field in the second quarter they left two big scoring opportunities on the field, one on a fumble and the other by running out of downs. The score at halftime was RL 20-7.
In the second half, MX continued to run and pass the ball well, scoring in the 3rd quarter on a Derek DeMarzo '18 to Cal Fries 26 yard pass to cut the MX deficit to 20-14. The deciding touchdown of the game came late in the 4th quarter as an RL receiver was again able to slip by MX defenders and gain a 28-14 advantage. To their credit, the Middlesex offense never quit, answering the RL score on a DeMarzo 2 yard run and with the McGann kick making the score 28-21. With little time left in the game, the Middlesex on-side kick was unsuccessful and ended the game 28-21.Â
The offense's performance in this game produced a 100 yard runner (Duhamel - 12 carries for 106 yards) and a 200 yard performance by our QB (DeMarzo - 12 for 26 and 221 yards). The offensive line of Casey Gillis '19, Dan Kent '19, Alex Flynn '19, Liam Alley '21,Wes Capitani '20 and Andoni Barberena '19 did an outstanding job along with fullback Michael Best '18. All our receivers had impressive performances - Cal Fries '20, Kam Landry '18, Cam Parker '18, Julian Farr '20, Oliver Quon '19 and Joe Belsanti '21. Our final game of the year against longtime rival St. George's will be at Middlesex this year with a 2:00 pm kickoff.
