Varsity Football Defeats St. Mark's, 14-7

10/11/2017 5:18:00 PM

In an exciting sequel to our second week's win over Rivers, the MX 11 defeated St. Mark's this past weekend, on the strength of our defense, two goal line stands, and an aerial attack that was needed to compliment our run game.

The game began with St. Mark's returning the opening kickoff to the Middlesex 9 yard line, putting the defense immediately in a difficult spot.  The MX defensive unit responded with an emotional goal line stand that stopped St. Mark's inside the 1 yard line, turning the ball over to the offense.  The offenses of both teams moved the ball up and down the field for the remainder of the first quarter and into the second but neither was able to finish a drive with points.  Midway through the second quarter, with both defenses still dominating the game, St. Mark's finally found pay dirt on a hard earned 19 yard run by their tailback. With the kick, St. Mark's led 7-0.

Just before halftime the Middlesex offense put a drive together moving the ball to the St. Mark's 20 yard line with 40 seconds to go.  Quarterback Derek DeMarzo '18 then connected with wide receiver Cole Nye '20 on an acrobatic tipped ball catch for a touchdown. The PAT was missed and Middlesex still trailed at the half 7-6.  Toward the end of the third quarter the Middlesex offense began to move the ball but a holding penalty then made for a long 2nd down and 20 at our own 30 yard line.  DeMarzo had to throw the ball and found our H back receiver Cam Parker '18 for a 25 yard gain that turned into Middlesex's go ahead score, as he broke a tackle and completed the 70 yard touchdown pass.  DeMarzo added two points on an option play to give Middlesex the lead at 14-7. The defense took over from there, needing another goal line stand in the closing moments of the game, to register the team's second win of the season.
