The Middlesex Girls' Varsity Tennis team won its second ISL match and second consecutive win this season against BB&N 10 - 4 Saturday afternoon. Given BB&N's urban location, they only have space for indoor courts, so the match was played inside.
Sophomore Leyla Hotamisligil stepped up to play #1. Leyla was off to an aggressive start and had a solid lead in the first few games. However, she struggled to maintain her rhythm with her serve and dropped the first set. She took the set break as an opportunity to reset and returned determined and focused. Fighting for each point, Leyla outlasted her opponent in the second set, winning decisively 6 - 2. Senior captain Abby Meyers played one of her best matches this season at #2, sweeping her sets. With a mature tactical approach, she was able to keep her opponent guessing by mixing up her pace and employing precise directional control to construct points. Rookie Helen Lasry '18 has shed her early season jitters and opened her match at #3 singles ready to win. She handily took the first set 6 -3. Nevertheless, her opponent's game picked up in the second set, and Helen struggled to maintain her stronghold, losing the set 3 - 6. Juniors Caroline Reynolds and Laura Kaye each swept their sets handily at #5 and #6, clinching the Zebra's victory overall.
The positive momentum followed into doubles. Leyla and Abby proved to a complementary doubles pair with Leyla's strong groundstrokes from the baseline and Abby's finesse at net. They won their set 8 - 2. Caroline and Laura played a more competitive match at #2 moving ahead and falling behind as the games were played out. Clearly, they were the team to want it more, as they defeated their opponents 9 - 7 with good communication and effective tactics and strategy.
The team will celebrate the W and will look forward to two practices before facing Brooks home on Wednesday.
