Varsity Football Travels to Roxbury Latin

11/1/2016 8:15:00 AM

This was a game that Chip Kelly would have been proud of, with offenses for both sides moving the ball up and down the field the entire game.  RL opened the scoring in the 1st quarter on a 10-yard pass and successfully ran for the 2 point conversion to take an 8-0 lead.  MX took the ensuing kickoff and moved the ball to the RL 15 yard line where it stalled on a 4th down pass play. But on RL's next offensive series, DB Rory Glavin '17 intercepted a pass giving MX excellent field position. It only took the MX offense 5 plays to even the score, on a Kabelo Tsotetsi '19 ten-yard TD run and a 2 point pass from QB Derek DeMarzo '18 to Glavin at 8-8.  RL would drive the ball again at the end of the 1st quarter to score, but the MX defense stopped the 2 point try to keep the lead to 6 points, 14-8.

At the start of the 2nd quarter, MX mounted a drive that finished in the end zone on a 10-yard pass from DeMarzo to Glavin and Pat McGann '18 added the PAT for a 15-14 MX lead.  RL answered for a 20-15 lead and MX came right back to reclaim the lead 22-20 on a 20-yard pass from DeMarzo to Glavin and McGann added the PAT.  RL's running game killed most of the clock for the rest of the quarter before scoring again for a 26-20 lead.  With less than two minutes left, the MX offense moved the ball to the RL 15 yard line, but time ran out on an incomplete pass in the end zone.  RL would score two more times in the 3rd quarter and force a safety at the beginning of the 4th quarter to extend their lead to 42-22.  In the 4th quarter, WR Sam Dwinell '17 caught a short pass from DeMarzo and electrified the fans with an 85-yard run to cut into the RL lead but the MX onside attempt was unsuccessful and the game would end with an RL victory 42-28.  Due to the end of daylight savings time and SATs next Saturday, Middlesex will take on Nobles in a short week on Friday, November 4 at home.
