Middlesex took the ball to begin the game. After a couple of first downs, the offense stalled and had to punt the ball away. St. Mark's got their ground game working and drove the ball down to the MX 20-yard line. On second down, after the MX defense stuffed their first down running play, a play action pass allowed the St. Mark's WR to get open for the first score of the game and a 7-0 lead. The MX offense answered on the next series with a 64-yard pass from QB Derek DeMarzo '18 to WR Sam Dwinell '17. The kick was blocked and caught by a St. Mark's defensive player who ran it back for the 2 points, making the score 9-6 in St. Mark's favor.
The MX defense stiffened in the second quarter and held the St. Mark's offense in check. Nearing the end of the 1st half the MX offense mounted another drive that was capped off by a 34-yard touchdown pass again to Dwinell from DeMarzo. The 2 point attempt failed but MX had the lead 12-9. Unfortunately, on the ensuing kickoff St. Mark's ran it back and with the 2 point attempt good, made the half time score 17-12.
In the second half, the MX defense really took control, registering four 4th down stops and controlling the line of scrimmage. Although the MX offense drove the ball up and down the field, ending the game with over 350 yards, they were not able to take any of their drives into the end zone. St. Mark's added two more scores in the second half, one on a Hail Mary pass that was deflected but caught setting up a 2-yard run and a costly turnover to make the final score 31-12. Middlesex will travel to West Roxbury this coming Saturday to take on Roxbury Latin at 2:30 PM.
