After a long frozen spring, Girls Varsity Crew opened against Southfield school Saturday afternoon. With a few seniors down from injury, the team hoped to start the season strong and leaned on young rowers and experienced coxswains to pull through. The day was sunny and warm, and the girls raced hard.
The first four held a lead from the start and defeated Southfield by a three second margin. The second boat, stroked by senior Rose-Marie Fuchs, managed to recover from a slow start to pull through Southfield and win by almost 20 seconds.
With Southfield only bringing three boats, the MX fourth boat raced alongside the thirds and, though they lost to the MX third, still defeated Southfield by 39 seconds.
The girls team is hoping to capitalize on some solid returning rowers and some strong new rowers to make this another successful racing season. Next up is a race away at Brooks with Lincoln, and a tough run the following week with home races against Groton and BBN.
