This year marks the sixth year that Middlesex and Andover have dedicated their game to breast cancer awareness. Rituals like pink game jerseys and a pink tailgate following the game make it a special day, but more importantly, it is an opportunity for the girls and families to connect to those who have battled, and currently are battling breast cancer. A significant aspect of the "Playing for the Pink" game is a fundraiser for Runway for Recovery (R4R). Runway for Recovery is the creation of Olivia Achtmeyer, a former Middlesex teacher/coach and former Andover teacher/coach, who started the non-profit in 2007 as a tribute to her mother. One of Olivia's missions is to help young females learn about breast cancer and help spread awareness to other young women. The annual event is a fashion show that features models who are breast cancer survivors or those who carry on the legacy of lost family members. Olivia describes R4R as a stage for those heroes among us. Middlesex and Andover field hockey families raised money through the sale of pink bows purchased in honor of those affected by the disease. The pink bows were on display on the sidelines as both teams played for a bigger "battle" today.
Donned in pink uniforms, Middlesex and Andover played an evenly matched game of field hockey. Both teams played with intensity and heart as possession regularly changed hands and much of the play was between the two 25 yard lines. However, 11 minutes into the game, the Zebras capitalized in the circle and found the back of the net following an offensive surge. Andover fought back, but the defensive unit led by goalie DeSimone kept the game at 1-0 at the half. The second half was much of the same as both teams battled for possession and scoring opportunities. Andover had a big push towards the end of the game, but they were stymied by the Zebras' excellent defensive play and poise. The seniors, Hannah, Ellie and Emma showed tremendous leadership in today's game.
