As forecasted, the Brooks vs. Middlesex field hockey game came down to the wire, as both teams fought relentlessly for every ball. Historically, the two teams have battled to a tie in regulation, sending several of the last ten matchups into overtime. A battle from the first whistle, both teams brought grit and determination to each zone of play. The Zebras edged Brooks in possession, playing much of the first half over their 50 yard line, but despite several attempts in the circle, Middlesex could not find the back of the net.
Following halftime, the Zebras had difficulty executing their style of play, resulting in a north-south game of ping-pong. While it was not the best half of field hockey, both teams refused to let down, clawing for every loose ball. Middlesex had a golden opportunity as the minutes dwindled, but the Brooks keeper stymied the Zebra forwards in an acrobatic diving save. At the opposite end, Middlesex goalie Cece DeSimone turned away several shots in the second half to keep Brooks at bay. At the end of regulation, both teams rallied for a physically taxing 7v7 full field overtime.
Brooks earned the first corner, but the three defenders and DeSimone denied the opportunity. The defensive stop fueled the Zebras as they took control of the overtime play in the ensuing minutes. The Zebras peppered the Brooks defenders and goalie with attempts in the circle, but history looked to repeat itself as the time dwindled. Finally, in a play almost identical to the regulation opportunity, Middlesex carried the ball down the field thanks to terrific play by the middies, and connected with the forwards for an exciting game-ending goal with just 1:25 remaining on the clock.
The Zebras will look forward to a rest on Sunday before gearing up for the Governor's game on Wednesday, October 14th.
