Strong Serving Propels Milton Past Zebras

9/18/2014 12:02:00 PM

The nascent varsity volleyball team took on Milton Academy in their home opener, losing a hard-fought match in three sets. The Zebras were hesitant in the first set, losing points by being caught off-balance by Milton's hard and low serves.

Middlesex began to find their rhythm in the middle of the set, managing some quality hits off of difficult plays, but still fell short 8-25. The Zebras came out fighting in the second set, showing their versatility and grit as they earned a kill off of a difficult dig by Lily Renneker '17 followed by a kill by setter Leyla Hotamisligil '18. In a particularly dramatic rally, Sarah Ong '16 managed to side out one of Milton's top servers with a fantastic dig.

The Zebras stayed competitive, making Milton work for every point, and ended the set 12-25. In the third and final set, Middlesex took an early 10-6 lead after a series of aces by Avery Light '18. In spite of some strong conversions by Middlesex, including a kill by Lily off of an assist by Abby Meyers '16, Milton pulled ahead again led by the phenomenal serving by their libero and finished the set 15-25.

The coaches are proud of the team's resilience and continued improvement throughout the match. The Zebras now look forward to a home tri-match on Saturday, September 20th against Lawrence Academy at 1:30 PM and St Paul's School at 3:30 PM.
