Historic First Win for Middlesex Varsity Volleyball

9/15/2014 8:34:00 AM

Middlesex's new Varsity Volleyball squad faced Beaver Country Day in their first match Saturday afternoon, coming from behind to win in four sets. The girls were hesitant in the first set, which they lost 17-25, missing a few hits before settling into their rhythm towards the end. The Zebras came out stronger in the second, though they found themselves down 20-24. The team was able to sideout Beaver's game point, with Lily Renneker '17 serving a consistent series of hard serves to close it out for Middlesex 26-24. Avery Light '18 had the final kill of the set with a crushing cross court hit assisted by Leyla Hotamisligil '18.

The third set opened with Middlesex caught out of system by a hard-hit serve to our setter. Alyssa McNally '16 stepped in for the set, assisting a kill by Lydia Paddock '17. The Zebras maintained a close lead through most of the set, thanks in part to some heroic digs by Sarah Ong '16, finishing the third set 25-21. Middlesex carried its momentum into the fourth set, with a series of assists by Abby Meyers '16 to each of our front row hitters featuring kills by Alyssa, Lily, and Rose-Marie Fuchs '15. Leyla threw the Beavers off balance with her consistent serve, placing the ball all over their defense and managing two aces as well as setting Ari Odom '17 up for a kill. Alyssa set to Lydia for the final kill of the set, ending at 25-16.

The Zebras now look forward to their home opener this upcoming Wednesday, September 17th, against Milton at 3pm (note the time change) as well as their tri-match with Lawrence and St. Paul's on Saturday 9/20 in the Atkins Cage.
