In the last home race of the season prior to the New England Championship in Worcester, girls' varsity crew defeated Pomfret in all four varsity boats, maintaining an undefeated season at home for girls' third and fourth boats. A varying tail wind made for some challenging starts and fast conditions.
In the fourth boat race, Middlesex took an early lead, pulling tip to tip with Pomfret by the 500-meter mark. Despite the fact that the Middlesex coxswain took an unnecessarily wide course and the Pomfret coxswain steered expertly between some tight buoys, the Middlesex girls were able to pull off the win.
The third boat flew off the line at a 39, but Pomfret hung even until Middlesex lengthened to their race pace and really started to move. Around the 1000-meter mark, the third boat took off, gaining open water on Pomfret.
The second boat race had a rocky start, with the two crews crashing oars around the 350-meter mark, after the breakage point. Both crews were equally affected, but the Middlesex crew was better able to recover their rhythm, and they jumped out on Pomfret. The two boats were tip to tip by the 1000-meter mark, and Middlesex had open water going into their sprint. Kudos to coxswain Elizabeth Telford '16, who steered the best course of the day.
In the first boat race, Middlesex and Pomfret held even off the start. As the Middlesex boat settled into their race pace, they moved steadily through Pomfret, gaining a boat length by the halfway point. Between the 1000 and the finish line, Middlesex continued to walk away.
It was a fine day of racing by all crews. We look forward to a good day on the water on
Saturday, May 24 at the New England Interscholastic Rowing Championships on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA.
