Middlesex traveled to the Nashua River to compete versus Groton on their formidable S-shaped 1230-meter course. In cold and wet conditions, Middlesex was edged out in all four races by Groton, who was out for redemption after Middlesex won two out of four races a week ago.
In the fourth boat race, Middlesex and Groton came off the line even and raced side-by-side for most of the first 1000m, thanks in large part to the terrific course steered by coxswain Elizah Stein '14. In the last thirty strokes, however, Middlesex ran out of steam and lost overlap with Groton.
In the second and third boats, Groton jumped Middlesex off the start, and Middlesex was not able to claw their way back.
The first boat race was a great race to watch. Middlesex was slow off the line, and Groton pulled ahead before they settled to a high 35. Middlesex stroke Miranda Gish '14 maintained a powerful 34, and the crew worked their back to pull even with Groton. The two crews swapped the lead as they wound around the S-course, and the finish came down to the final 30-stroke straightaway. Groton edged out Middlesex by a second; had the course been a full 1500m (as it will be when the two crews meet again at NEIRAs), Middlesex might have been the victor.
