The girls' varsity ice hockey team faced a tough opponent on Wednesday afternoon when they traveled to Cambridge, MA to take on the Knights of BB&N. The hosting team caught the Zebras by surprise with their explosive style of play and quick transition game. And after 45 minutes of back and forth play, it was the Knights who skated away with a 5-2 victory.
BB&N wasted no time getting to work in the first period. They tallied their first goal of the afternoon at the 10:39 mark with their second goal following closely behind at the 5:45 mark. Although the Zebras outshot their opponent 14-7, the Knights' goaltender was outstanding between the pipes.
Middlesex played a more consistent and aggressive game in the second period but could not penetrate the BB&N defensive wall. The Zebras kept the Knights' scoring opportunities at bay until the 4:50 mark when they were able to sneak a player behind the MX defense off the left post for their third goal of the contest.
The Zebras continued to fight their way back into the game in the third period but BB&N stood their ground. Middlesex was able to light up the lamp with two goals of their own, however, their efforts were not enough to make up the ground they had given in the first and second period. BB&N cemented their fate with two more goals to take back the commanding lead and leave the ice with a 5-2 victory.
Middlesex will look to rebound when they hit the road on Saturday, February 22 to take on St.George's in Newport, RI for their final regular-season game at 2:00pm.
