On Wednesday, February 12 the girls' varsity ice hockey team traveled to Groton, MA to face the Spartans of Lawrence Academy. Despite the Zebras being the first team to get on the score board however, the hosting team came roaring back in the second and third stanza to defeat Middlesex 3-2 in overtime.

The Zebras controlled much of the first period, outshooting their opponent 11-7. Although the Spartans had their chances to take the lead, it was Middlesex who got the ball rolling at the 4:56 mark with their first tally of the afternoon.

The Spartans caught the Zebras off guard in the second period with their explosive style of play and battle for every 50-50 puck. Their eagerness to score paid off just 1:46 into the period when they were able to tie the game at 1-1. Middlesex fought back but was never quite able to regain the momentum they had put forth in the first stanza. The Spartans continued to apply the pressure in the Zebras' defensive end, scoring their second goal of the afternoon with 9:27 left to play in the period.

Middlesex made several adjustments to their game in the third and final period of the afternoon. They peppered the Spartans' goaltender with numerous shots and played with a sense of urgency and purpose. With just 4:34 left to play in regulation, the Zebras were able to tie the game at 2-2 after Arushi Ray '14 made a crafty behind the back pass in the neutral zone to ignite the Middlesex offense. With the clock ticking down, neither team was able to convert on any of their attempts and the game was sent into overtime.  

 Both teams saw an equal amount of scoring opportunities in the five minute sudden death but it was the Spartans who struck first with 44.3 seconds left to play. Disappointed but not discouraged, Middlesex will look to regain their footing when they host Brooks on Friday, February 14 at 5:00pm.
