Middlesex Girls' Varsity Ice Hockey fell to the hosts Rivers School on Friday evening, 6-2 in the opening of ISL League play. The Zebras scored first but a fast paced and relentless Rivers offense prevailed. Senior captain Leah Olson scored at 5:50 of the opening period to give MX a 1-0 lead. Rivers tied the game five minutes later with a goal by Kasey Cunningham. The Zebras stymied the attack with stellar defense by Olson, Caelin Flaherty, Mary Demoulas and Itsy Seeman to head into intermission tied at one.
Rivers took their first lead of the game in the second period as Jordan Cross and Jenna Letterie scored back to back goals to give Rivers a 3-1 lead. Olson responded on the Zebras powerplay with 39 seconds remaining the period to keep the margin at one. But it was all Rivers in the third with three unanswered goals for the, 6-2 final.
Middlesex returns to action on Friday, December 19-20 at the Southfield Holiday Tournament.
