The sun was shining, on a crisp and windy day in Newport, RI, as Middlesex traveled to St. George's to take on the Dragons for the 111
th meeting of this storied football rivalry. At stake was the silver football that the team who won would be able to place in their trophy case. The game turned out to be just what everyone expected, a back and forth battle with both teams showing plenty of offense.
The Zebras got things going right away, moving down the field on their first possession by placing the ball in the hands of the backfield tandem of George Morris '15 and James Burr '15. Burr would complete the drive on a four-yard touchdown run. The kick was wide but MX claimed an early 6-0 lead. In the second quarter, both offenses continued to roll. St. George's would answer the MX score on a 20-yard pass but their kick was also wide to tie the score at 6-6. MX again went on a long drive to recapture the lead on a two-yard run by Morris. The two point conversion was also good on another run by Burr for a 14-6 lead. As the second quarter was coming to an end, St. George's, given a short field, scored on a 14-yard pass. Their two point conversion was also good to tie the score at halftime 14-14.
In the second half Middlesex would score two more times, once in each quarter. In the fourth quarter both St. George's and Middlesex would each score one more time. St. George's first on a 23-yard run. After the touchdown, St. George's decided to go for the lead on a two point conversion, but the MX defense was equal to the challenge, stopping the run and maintaining a 21-20 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, James Burr fielded the kick and ran the ball back to the St. George's 25 yard line, setting up the offense in great field position. After five running plays, tight end Jack Lyne '16 gave Middlesex some breathing room on a 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Austin Dorsey '16. The PAT was good by Carlin and Middlesex's lead grew to 28-20, which would be the final score of the game.
