Field Hockey "Plays For Pink" at Andover

10/20/2014 3:24:00 PM

Middlesex Field Hockey traveled to rival Phillips Andover to compete in the fifth annual "Playing for Pink" game on Wednesday, October 15th. The game was inspired by former Middlesex and Andover faculty member and field hockey coach, Olivia Achtmeyer.  Olivia is the founder of "Runway for Recovery," a fashion show featuring models that are currently in treatment for breast cancer, survivors, or children that have lost a parent to breast cancer. The team was ready to give a very strong Andover team a good battle in honor and support of Breast Cancer Awareness.

Charlotte Livingston played relentless defense on the talented Andover forward line and Jenna Doherty notched two defensive saves to maintain the low scoring game.  In the first stanza, Claire Miller nearly scored on a great feed up the middle, but the Andover goalie made the save.  Despite a valiant Zebra effort, and several saves by goalie Olson, Andover slipped two goals in the first half.  The Zebras had more offensive opportunities in the second half, and the Middlesex stalwart defense stopped many Andover attacks, but it wasn't enough to steal the win.

The "Playing for Pink" game is a way to spread awareness to the high school population and play in honor of those who are currently battling, or have battled breast cancer. Each team showed their support by donning pink jerseys and playing with pink balls during the game. The stadium at Andover was decorated with pink balloons and ribbons, honoring those who have battled breast cancer, and both teams participated in a pink-themed tailgate following the game provided by our generous parents.

The field hockey team raised $950 for Runway for Recovery, an organization whose mission is to provide support for families affected by breast cancer. For more information on Runway for Recovery, please visit Olivia's website at: http://www.runwayforrecovery.com/index.html
