10/16/2014 8:29:00 AM

The Middlesex Varsity Volleyball team traveled to Thayer Academy on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Tigers in three sets.

MX came out a little shaky in the first set, missing serves and losing points to errors. Still, they came up with quite a few strong plays, including a kill by Lily Renneker '17 off of the assist by Abby Meyers '16, a kill by Ari Odom '17 assisted by Leyla Hotamisligil '18, a big block by Alyssa McNally '16 and another by captain Rose-Marie Fuchs '15, and aced serves by Abby and by Lydia Paddock '17. Sarah Ong '16 stepped in to serve and play as defensive specialist in the back row, and aced out the set, ending 25-21.

The Zebras came out stronger in the second, playing more consistently at their level. They took the lead immediately with a pair of aces by Abby, followed by a pair of kills by Ari off of Abby's assist. Abby set up a kill by Lydia for a big side out. Maile Cowell '17 put together a series of points for Middlesex including an aced serve and several assists, including one to  outside hitter Avery Light '18. Abby set up two kills in a row by Lydia to bring the Zebras to set point, and they finished the set 25-14.

Middlesex scored first in the third set, as well, with an off-speed kill by Lily Renneker off of Maile's assist. Libero Nina Hutteman '18 showed off her defense with a series of great digs in a few long rallies. Avery managed to rack up 6 consecutive points, including 3 aces, off of her hard serve. The game ended with some great action at the net, including kills by Lydia and Avery off of Leyla's assists and some great blocks by both Lydia and Avery. Lydia had the final kill of the set, ending 25-10.

The Zebras look forward to hosting Winchendon on Saturday 10/18 at 4:00 PM.
