Zebras Top Tigers 2-0

1/26/2014 8:29:00 AM

The Middlesex girls' varsity ice hockey team extended their winning streak to three on Saturday afternoon in Concord, MA.  The Zebras hosted Thayer Academy for a 3:00pm ISL showdown and defeated their opponent 2-0.

Having played a game the night before, the Zebras got off to a slow start in the first stanza. Halfway through the period however, the team started to find their rhythm when Caelin Flaherty '17 received a pass at the point from Arushi Ray '14 and Cici Frattasio '14 and fired her shot past the Tigers' goaltender to take the 1-0 lead. Middlesex continued to keep the puck in their opponents' defensive end but were unable to convert on anymore of their attempts before the period came to a close.

Middlesex started the second period with more energy and determination. And as the Zebras continued to challenge the Tigers' outstanding goalie with numerous shots on net, they were finally rewarded for their efforts with a goal at the 12:58 mark.  Breaking out of the Zebras' defensive end, Leah Olson '15 found Ray in the neutral zone who skated the puck down the right side of the ice deep into the Tigers' offensive territory.  Just above the goal line, Ray found classmate Hailey Porter off the left post where she (Porter) one timed the puck into the net for the desperately needed insurance goal.

The third frame proved to be Middlesex's best hockey of the night as they outshot their opponent 12-3. However, Thayer's goaltender continued to be a dominate force in the net and as result the score remained 2-0 as the final buzzer sounded.

Christina Cleroux '14 recorded her third shutout of the season for Middlesex.

The team will look to keep their winning streak alive when they host Groton on Wednesday, January 29 at 3:00pm.
