The girls' varsity hockey team hosted division I St. Mark's on Wednesday, January 15 and came away with a 1-1 tie. And although the Zebras were the first team to get on the score board, the Lions responded with a goal of their own halfway through the second period for the equalizer.
Middlesex came out for the midweek game a bit sluggish but were able to get the puck in the net nonetheless. At the 8:45 mark in the first period, Maddie Winslow '14 scored her eighth goal of the season when classmate Cici Frattasio '14 found her off the right corner of the Lions' net to get things started for Middlesex. Both teams continued to struggle to take control of the game however, with the puck spending an equal amount of time at either end of the ice.
The second period was played much like the first, with neither team fully in control of the game. And after a breakdown in the Zebras' defensive zone 4:29 into play, the Lions pounced on a loose puck in front of the net for the 1-1 equalizer. Christina Cleroux '14 turned away nine shots to preserve the tie entering the locker room.
The Zebras picked up the momentum in the third and final period of the game, outshooting their opponent 10-6. Despite their best efforts however, Middlesex could not get the puck past the Lions' outstanding goaltender to come away with the win. And after a five minute overtime that saw an equal amount of chances for both teams to put the game away, the end result was a 1-1 tie.
Middlesex will host Cushing Academy next on Friday, January 17 for a 4:30pm game.
