The girls' varsity ice hockey team picked up a big win on the road against Governor's Academy on Saturday, January 11 in Byfield, MA. The Zebras tallied two goals in the second and two in the third en route to a 4-0 victory, thus returning home with their first league win of the season.
After a scoreless first period, Cici Frattasio '14 got the ball rolling for Middlesex when she tucked a loose puck past the Gov's goaltender off a rebound from linemate Hailey Porter's '14 shot. The goal came just 2:16 into play and tilted the momentum of the game in the Zebras' favor. Â Governor's did not go down without a fight however, they had several close calls but Christina Cleroux '14 was once again a dominate force in net. With 2:30 left on the clock, Maddie Winslow '14 skated the puck from Middlesex's defensive end and weaved her way into Governor's offensive territory. After making two beautiful moves to eliminate her defender, Winslow wasted no time in putting the puck deep into the right side of the net for the second goal of the evening.
Up by two goals to start the final period of the game, the Zebras' defensive unit of Brooke Gary '14, Leah Olson '15, Mary Demoulas '16 and Caelin Flaherty '17 kept their opponents scoring opportunities to a minimum. Arushi Ray '14 tallied the third goal of the afternoon at the 10:03 mark when she walked in from the top right circle and fired her shot past the Gov's goaltender. Â And although the hosting team had several more opportunities to close the gap, Middlesex held strong. The fourth and final goal of the afternoon came with 22 seconds left on the clock when Gary made a pass to Frattasio at the red line. Frattasio then executed a beautiful cross ice pass to Ray at the opposite blue line who put the puck in the empty net for her second goal of the afternoon. Â
The Zebras will look to carry the positive momentum of this game with them into next week as they face league opponent St. Mark's on Wednesday, January 15 at 2:30pm in Concord, MA.
