Zebras Skate to 4-1 Victory Over Dragons on "Senior Day"

2/23/2013 11:01:00 PM

The girls’ varsity hockey team celebrated "Senior Day" with a 4-1 victory over ISL rivals St. Georges. In what could potentially be the final home game of their career, Maddie Miller, Isabel Kreitler, Jeanie Dwinell, Ashley Arnold and Eleanor Knutzen came out of the gates ready to leave everything they had on the ice, and they certainly did not disappoint.

St. George’s caught Middlesex back on their heels in the first 10:00 minutes of the period as the Zebras struggled to shift the momentum of the game their way. And despite the Middlesex seven to two advantage on shots on goal, both teams entered the locker room at zero a piece.

Fittingly so, senior captain Isabel Kreitler was the first Zebra to light up the lamp 10:06 into the second period when she weaved her way through two defenders and tucked the puck past the goalie on her backhand (assisted by linemate Sarah Tabeek ’14). However, the Dragons were quick to even the score at the 13:58 mark when Charlotte O’Halloran walked in from the right side for a quick, low shot on net. Not :10 seconds later, the green line of Eleanor Knutzen ’13, Maddie Winslow ’14 and Cici Frattasio ’14 took back the lead when Winslow won the face off and immediately fed Frattasio the puck in the Drangons’ defensive end. Frattasio quickly looked to her right and found Knutzen at the center hash marks for the go ahead goal.

The score remained 2-1 for much of the third period until Maddie Winslow served Jeanie Dwinell a pass at the blue line 10:13 into the play. Upon receiving the puck, the Dedham, MA native  ripped her shot past the goal line for the third tally of the afternoon.  The green line would close out the scoring for the contest on an empty net when Knutzen and Frattasio worked the puck to Winslow out front to take the 4-1 lead.

Christina Cleroux ended her regular season campaign with 16 saves. Middlesex, now 15-6-1 will wait to hear word regarding the 2013 division II New England tournament standings. The quarterfinal games will begin on Wednesday, February 27.
