Girls' Varsity Hockey Drops Milton, 3-1

2/18/2013 8:58:00 PM

On Monday, February 18 the Mustangs of Milton Academy traveled to Concord, MA for an ISL make-up game on Presidents’ Day. After a slow start, the Zebras rallied late in the first period en route to a 3-1 victory, thus improving their season record to 13-6-1.

Milton took control of the first 10:00 minutes of the period and made several aggressive rushes into the Zebras’ defensive zone before the hosting team was able to find their rhythm. And for their hustle, the Mustangs were the first team to notch a point on the score board after an intercepted pass on the Middlesex power play. The Zebras however, quickly set to work on generating their offensive game and tallied their first goal of the night 10:24 into the period.  After collecting the puck in the corner, Jeanie Dwinell ’13 caught Cici Frattasio ’14 at the hash marks for the breakout pass who then found Maddie Winslow ’14 storming up the ice to her left. Winslow made a dazzling pull to her left to lose her defender and then quickly tucked the puck behind the Mustangs’ goaltender for the 1-1 equalizer. The Zebras left the ice with a 16-8 advantage in shots on goal.

Middlesex continued to apply the pressure to Milton’s goaltender in the second period, and though she made several outstanding saves, Winslow would convert 5:25 into the play when she knocked a loose puck off the right post into the net with assists coming from Arushi Ray ’14 and Frattasio. For the next several minutes, Milton would have their share of opportunities to tie the game up, but Middlesex thwarted their efforts with their smart defensive play. Before the period would come to a close, Fattasio scored her second point of the night when linemates Eleanor Knutzen ’13 and Winslow worked the puck to her at the top of the circle; Frattasio then walked her way into the slot and fired her shot over the right shoulder of the Milton goaltender to take the 3-1 lead.

Although neither team was able to score in the third, the excitement and pace of the game continued to be just as thrilling as the first two periods. Christina Cleroux and Milton’s Margaret Draper turned in stellar performances in net, and shutdown numerous scoring opportunities for both sides.

The Zebras will host BB&N on Wednesday, February 20 at 4:00pm for their second to last game of the regular season.
